Speed Controller of an Electric Golf Cart

An electric golf cart comes with a different speed control system that is different from the gas engine which needs fuel to work. The cart has a motor circuit. The electric resistance is used to produce a voltage drop with the circuit. This thing basically consumes the electric energy and you can control the golf cart’s motor’s speed. This whole thing is known as a speed controller.

How does a Speed Controller work?

The golf cart's speed controller sends its current and  battery voltage to its motor. This entire process depends on your golf cart's input device, which includes its throttle. That's how the golf cart's speed controller allows you to operate its acceleration rate, as well as its deceleration rate.

Speed Controller's Functions

In addition to controlling the cart’s speed, there are a few other functions that speed controllers can offer.

  1. Limit the current to the motor to protect both engine and controller in case of overloading.
  2. Determine the battery current so that battery is protected from excessive discharging.
  3. Monitor battery health and charge.
  4. Protect the controller from overheating.
  5. Manage how fast the cart accelerates when full throttle is applied quickly

Golf Cart Speed Controller Replacement

If you have determined that the speed controller is at fault, you may have to get a replacement. Make sure you get one of the same or compatible controllers for your make and model electric golf cart.

Before beginning to remove and reinstall the new controller, be sure to disconnect all power from the batteries. Next, make a note of which wire goes where and most importantly, don’t allow one of them to touch and short out. Even if the power is disconnected (or you think it is) it is too expensive of a mistake to accidentally burn the new unit out.

Hand tighten all connections and terminals and do not over-tighten because stripped out screws are no fun. After you are certain all connections a correct and secure, reconnect the power and road test your golf cart.
