A Brief History of E-Z-GO Golf Carts

The E-Z-GO company was started on June 13th 1954 in a garage in Augusta Georgia by two brothers, Billy and Beverly "Bev" Dolan. This was the day after Bev had gotten out of the military. The very first golf carts they built used military surplus 24 volt motors which originally operated the wing flaps on the B-17. They ran these motors on a 36 volt battery stack.

Once they got started they moved the production to Grovetown Georgia to have them assembled at a machine shop owned by Paul Corley. See the History of Pargo for an interesting side light to this story. In 1960 they sold their company to Textron. The head of Textron at that time was Royal Little who bought E-Z-GO because of his love of the game of golf. Royal retired at the end of 1960. Billie and Bev both stayed on board until 1978 when Billy Dolan left with some other employees and investors to purchase Club Car which at that time was located in Texas.

They later moved the company to Augusta Georgia where it remains to this day. All of the golf carts produced ran on batteries until 1971 when they introduced a 175cc model 17-CES 1PG two cycle Robin version. They used this four bolt head Robin engine made by Fugi Heavy Industries until 1975. In 1976 they came out with a six head bolt model EC25-DS 244cc two stroke Robin engine also made by Fugi. This engine also had an internal starter/generator that was kept until mid 1980. In mid 1980 they introduced the external Hitachi starter/generator. This model EC25-2PG engine was used until 1988. In 1989 until 1993 they used the model EC25-3PG 244cc two stroke Robin engine. In 1991 they came out with their first four stroke engine , a 295 cc, 9 hp one which was replaced by a 350 cc four cycle in 1996. In 1997 Textron bought out Cushman and continues to manufacture Cushman industrial vehicles as well as their E-Z-GO line of golf carts and industrial vehicles.

A Brief History of Club Car Golf Carts

Club Car was started around 1958 by Igloo Products, Inc. of Houston, Texas most famous for their coolers. Orville Homer Landreth owned one third of the company at the time and he designed and built the first Club Car golf buggy. In 1960 Igloo merged with Production Tooling Company. At this time Mr. Landreth left the company and took the tooling and rights to the golf cart as part of his settlement. He built the Club Cars for two years. In 1962 he sold the golf cart business to William (Bill) Stevens along with his son William P. Stevens, Jr. They moved the tooling and production of the carts to Augusta, Georgia. The first Club cars that were built by Orville Landreth did not have a front fender. Pictured above in the upper left is a blue 1964 Club Car with no top. These carts were referred to as the Stevens Club Car in advertising. This three wheel design was kept until the early part of 1970 when they introduced their all new four wheel model Caroche. The company was sold to the Johns Manville Company on December 5th, 1973. On March 1st of 1978 Johns Manville sold the company to CC Manufacturing. This sale included the trademark patent dated 12/22/64 and the common law trademarks of "Caroche" and "Islander". The "Caroche" models are the two pictured in the middle above. This group that bought Club Car included Billy Dolan, one of the founding brothers of E-Z-GO along with several other former E-Z-GO employees. In 1981 they introduced the DS model which still looks similar today except for changes made to the cowl in 1993. They introduced a four cycle gas model in 1984 with a 341 cc side valve flat head engine. In 1992 they replaced the side valve gas engine with a new overhead valve Kawasaki engine. In 1995 Ingersol-Rand acquired Clark and Club Car. The same year they offered a new 48 volt electric option which later that year came with regenerative braking. In 2004 they introduced an entirely new cart named the Precedent.

A Brief History of Yamaha Golf Carts

Yamaha imported their first golf cart into the US market in 1978. The first model was named the G1 and was first available with a 2-cycle gas engine. The following year in 1979 they came out with the 36 volt electric. In the mid 1980s Yamaha built a manufacturing facility in Noonan, Georgia and built their first four cycle gas cart, the model G2 which was introduced in 1985. It was also available as a 36 volt electric. In 1986 they came out with the G3, Sun Classic which was later replaced by the larger G5, these carts were predecessor of our modern Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs). They came with a full hard roof with a tempered glass windshield and even a windshield wiper. It also had headlights and turn signals. It was available in 2 cycle gas or electric. The G9 model came out in 1991, the next generation of the G2. In 1993 they introduced their first utility cart, the model G11 "Yamahauler". This model came with a heavy duty steel front bumper and an aluminum box with a tailgate as well as a rear trailer hitch. In 1996 they installed a larger 301cc engine in the G11. In 1995 the G14 was introduced followed by the G16 and G19 in 1996 which was Yamahas first 48 volt cart. The G20 "Concierge" was introduced in 2000. This was Yamahas first stretch multi-passenger cart. This was followed the next year with the G21 utility vehicle which replaced the G11 in 2001 followed by the G22 in 2003. In 2005 they came our with three new utility vehicles, the G23, G27, and G28. In 2007 they came out with a totally redesigned cart called "The Drive" Yamaha YDR.
